Interactive Weaves Film

Throughout the Interactive Weaves project I worked with filmmaker Alex Fountain, a Hotwalls Studios Alumni who photographed, documented and filmed all the events.

The film was projected onto an old sail in the Historic Round Tower for the Exhibition. Fountain captured the public engagement, artists at work and the community coming together to weave.

“Filming the interactive weaves project and events has been really different to my usual work. I spend a lot of time behind the camera in fairly stressful environments, usually on a film set. So, instead to be documenting the workshops, I actually found it really relaxing.

The challenge with each workshop was to capture it slightly differently. Each time, I'd have to film, photograph, and edit my work differently to reflect that week's weave, atmosphere and weather.

My favourite workshop to photograph was the Moon Weave. Because it was just a great sunny day, and the weave looked really great in the sun. And it's the day where I was able to find the best light and composition for photos.

Being able to watch how the different artists worked especially the life-painters and sketchers working out their composition and how they captured the days events in their own medium and style.

I tried to film and photograph using wider lenses, which forced me to get closer to anything or anyone I was photographing. This was a deliberate choice to make the images feel a little more 'alive', to give a feeling of being present at the workshops.

It's been nice to see people create something collectively, weaving together. And I've really enjoyed capturing bits of that. My favourite moments to film were when multiple people were all weaving at once.”
